Review

SocialMediaPlayer is a media player based on Adobe Air. It works with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Usually, I would tell you what the application is about, what it can do, and then (and only then) tell you how well or bad it works. I'll do things the other way this time, however. I am greatly disappointed with this application. It is supposed to be a media player that can display artwork and fancy visualizations and allows you to share what you are listening to with your friends on Twitter. However, SocialMediaPlayer is lacking at the core. For this application to play any files, you have to specify a media folder for it to look for files. You can't just open files or drag them to the GUI.

I tried to load a folder with music files in two operating systems: Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Windows XP SP2. Both failed miserably. The app kept on telling me that it is loading files. How long can it take to load 10 mp3 files? I mean, it's 2009 right? Or am I using WinAMP still? Even if it didn't load any of my media files, it showed artwork for similar artists, based on the filenames of my mp3 files. If you click the artwork, it takes you nowhere, so it is not any better. The graphical user interface is plain ugly. Buttons are hard to click, settings are saved in a weird fashion, and, well, it seemed not to want to work for me.
Advantages
  • None.
Disadvantages
  • Buggy.
  • Didn't work.
  • Ugly GUI.
